Welcome to the ICP Cluster
Initiated by the Theatre and Performance subject area, and developed with Digital Media and Creative Music Technology colleagues from the School of Arts and New Media, the Interdisciplinary & Collaborative Practices Cluster aims to contribute to the growing field of interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches for making, studying and furthering cutting-edge research practice. It is evident that practices that are ‘on the edge’ or merge several disciplines such as performance, live art, dance, sound art, new media, design, digital technologies, environmental studies, education and social and other sciences, as well as their respective communities of practice, are speedily establishing themselves as fundamental within the shifting cultural landscapes of the 21st century. Therefore, the aim of the research cluster is to investigate various areas related to collaborative, inter/cross/trans-disciplinary and practice-led research, focusing on the identification, analysis and critique of emergent practices and methodological paradigms. Drawing on existing expertise within the team, the cluster is open to all interested University of Hull staff, as well as interested colleagues from the national and international academic community.
Current areas of investigation
- Performance and New Media
- Human Computer Interaction & Design.
However, the ICP Cluster aims to expand its area of enquiry and develop further research in connection to other disciplines such as cultural and media studies, engineering, environmental studies, law, medicine, but not only...
Strands of activity
Currently, the ICP Research Cluster focuses on three main strands of activity:
- Food 4 Thought
- Working Groups
- Lab for Collaborative Research Projects
Aims
ICP Cluster is a research body committed to promoting an inclusive policy aiming at the establishment of a collaborative research culture based on creativity and innovation. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to relevant research processes, initiatives, exchanges and outputs, within the current national and international landscapes of both the academy and the creative industries.
Principles
- All projects developed have an interdisciplinary/cross-disciplinary/trans-disciplinary approach. Through this, the cluster aims to develop a specific identity that makes it distinctive from the multitude of other such formations at national/international level
- The cluster understands the value of risk, hybridity and engaging with unfamiliar terrains, and therefore aims to make a contribution to the solution of real-world problems through interdisciplinary practice and research in cultural areas relevant to the 21st century
- The cluster aims to move away from the concept of the lone researcher by promoting collaborative research projects as well connected methodologies of working. To achieve this, a main focus of the cluster will be on PAR and applied research projects
- The cluster aims to engage with themes/topics of research likely to produce multiple outputs, some of which might also lead to enterprise and educational developments/outputs
- The cluster aims to communicate effectively with academia, industry, government and the wider public
- The cluster aims to encourage and nurture enthusiasm and ambition in the membership in order to bring viable projects to fruition rapidly
- The Cluster aims to extend research collaborations to other institutions, networks and bodies through its Research Support Network (i.e. governmental innovation centres, Culture Lab Newcastle, iHull, Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths, as well as international bodies, etc.)
- The cluster aims to become part of the university’s REA/REF narrative the university through submissions in the areas of theatre & performance, music, computer science, etc.
- The cluster aims to develop and become the main knowledge contributor to C-AIR- a Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Enterprise to be established in the near future.
